MAYODAN – The N.C. Department of Transportation awarded an $18 million contract to Smith-Rowe, LLC. of Mount Airy to upgrade an interchange and replace a bridge along U.S. 220 in Rockingham County.
The project, located on U.S. 220 at the U.S. 311/N.C. 135 interchange, will replace the bridge over U.S. 220 and upgrade the interchange to improve traffic flow and accommodate future Interstate 73 improvements.
A new, wider bridge featuring improved turn lanes and a sidewalk will be built just north of the current structure. Once the new bridge is complete, the existing bridge will be removed.
During construction, traffic will be maintained on the current bridge, with occasional, short-term closures needed to connect the new bridge alignment to the existing roadways.
Construction is expected to begin by early spring and be completed by the fall of 2028.
