RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in
NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
I-485 Express Lanes Ribbon Cutting
State and local leaders recently joined the N.C. Department of Transportation for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the
new Interstate 485 Express Lanes, which add one express lane in each direction for approximately 17 miles between I‑77 and U.S. 74 in south Charlotte.
“For those of us that live and work in the Charlotte area, we’re all very familiar with the traffic challenges,” said Western Deputy Chief Engineer Brett Canipe. “And that is the intent of this project, to help alleviate the traffic congestion that exists on the route today.”
The project is part of a growing express lane network designed to improve traffic flow and provide more reliable travel times for drivers.

Fort Bragg Mobility Study
NCDOT, in partnership with Fort Bragg, is conducting a survey to gather feedback from service members and their families as part of an effort to explore new transit options for those who live and work on base.
The survey will help both organizations better understand daily travel needs and key mobility challenges on and around the base, and the results will guide recommendations to ensure future improvements reflect the needs of the military community.
The survey has been distributed to Fort Bragg’s military community, and the deadline for responses has been extended to March 16.
Daylight Saving Time
Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday at 2 a.m., bringing brighter evenings but a darker morning commute.
That shift can make it harder to see the road and the people who use it.
To stay safe, the department urges motorists to ensure their vehicle’s exterior and interior lights are working properly, stay alert for pedestrians and bicyclists, and make sure you’re well‑rested and never drive drowsy.
