Rock Removal Scheduled for I-26 Connector Project

ASHEVILLE – Crews working on the I-26 Asheville Connector Project will conduct planned rock removal operations as part of construction activities for the project’s southern section.

The first controlled blast is currently scheduled for approximately 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 11, weather and site conditions permitting. The blasting will take place near the I-26 interchange area where the connector project ties into I-40 East.

To ensure the safety of workers and drivers, slow-rolling roadblocks will be implemented on Interstate 40 near Exit 46A while each blast occurs. Traffic will be briefly slowed in both directions of I-40 beginning shortly before the blast to allow crews to safely complete the operation. Motorists should expect brief delays of approximately 10 to 15 minutes.

Controlled blasting is a common construction method used to safely break up large rock so it can be removed during roadway construction. It allows crews to clear rock more quickly and continue building the new roadway. Residents and businesses in the area may hear a loud noise during the blast, but the operation is carefully planned and monitored to ensure it is conducted safely.

Contractor Archer-Wright has mobilized a specialized blasting crew to the project site. Engineers estimate up to eight blasts will be needed to complete this portion of the project. Blasting operations will take place Monday through Friday between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m., depending on weather and site conditions.
