JONESVILLE – An N.C. Department of Transportation contractor is replacing a 61-year-old Interstate 77 bridge in Yadkin and Surry counties.
Smith-Rowe LLC, of Mount Airy, earned the $16.8 million contract to replace the bridge that carries I-77 North over the Yadkin River and N.C. 268 between Yadkin and Surry counties. NCDOT replaced the I-77 South bridge in 2007.
Crews began the first phase of construction in mid-March. The first phase involves adding a temporary lane and pavement markings to I-77 South.
Once finished, I-77 North and South traffic will share the I-77 South bridge while crews remove the I-77 North bridge and build its replacement.
The contract calls for all construction to finish by late 2028. It does not allow narrowing or closing lanes during daytime hours on I-77 or during morning rush hour on N.C. 268.
