CARTHAGE – One intersection each in Scotland County and Randolph County will be converted into all-way stops next week.
The traffic services unit for the N.C. Department of Transportation's Division 8, which is based in Carthage, plans to install all-way stops at the following locations and dates:
On April 21, Turnpike Road at Xway Road/West Boulevard in Scotland County. Currently, only drivers on Turnpike Road must stop.
On April 22: Farmer Denton Road/Dunbar Bridge Road at Old N.C. Highway 49 in Randolph County. Currently, only drivers on Denton Road/Dunbar Bridge Road must stop.
For both locations, the work will begin in the morning with crews installing additional signs and pavement markings. Motorists should be aware of crews and equipment in these intersections while work is underway. This work is weather-dependent and could be postponed.
The division is making these changes based on the crash patterns and traffic volumes at these two locations. According to a departmental review in 2023, all crashes were reduced by 55 percent – and fatal and serious-injury crashes by 92 percent – after similar intersections were converted into all-way stops.
