PILOT MOUNTAIN – An N.C. Department of Transportation contractor will begin replacing a bridge in Surry County next week.
Crews will shift traffic to a temporary structure and begin removing the existing 64-year-old bridge on U.S. 52 North over Toms Creek on Monday, April 20.
To complete the traffic shift, crews must close U.S. 52 North near the bridge beginning at 9 p.m. Sunday. A signed detour will guide drivers around the closure by taking U.S. 52 to N.C. 268 then Old U.S. 52 before returning to U.S. 52. The road will reopen in the temporary traffic pattern by 6 a.m. Monday.
Smithe-Rowe LLC, of Mount Airy, earned the $13 million contract to replace the bridges over Toms Creek in 2024. Crews finished replacing the U.S. 52 South bridge in March.
The contract calls for all construction to finish in summer 2027.
