Detour route for I-87 Northbound ramp (Exit 7) closure.
RALEIGH - The North Carolina Turnpike Authority is continuing construction on the eastern portion of the Complete 540 project, Phase 2. This project will extend the Triangle Expressway (Toll N.C. 540) from the I-40/I-42/Toll N.C. 540 interchange near Garner and Clayton to the existing I-540/I-87/U.S. 64/U.S. 264 interchange in Knightdale, providing the missing link to complete the outer 540 loop around the greater Raleigh area.
The I-87 Northbound ramp (Exit 7) to access I-540 Westbound is scheduled to temporarily close to traffic overnight starting on or around May 4. The ramp will close from 12:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. each night.
Drivers wishing to access I-540 Westbound will use the following detour route:
- Continue driving on I-87 Northbound past Exit 7
- Take Exit 9 onto Smithfield Road
- Turn left onto Smithfield Road
- Immediately turn left to take the ramp to access I-87 Southbound
- Continue driving on I-87 Southbound
- Take Exit 7 to access I-540 Westbound
Drivers may experience delays and should pay close attention when driving along the roadway.
The temporary closure and associated detour are weather dependent.
