CANTON – A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation will close one lane of Interstate 40 West in Haywood County next week to accommodate a traffic shift related to bridge replacement.
Crews from Zachary Construction will close one lane just beyond Newfound Road (Exit 33) from 7 p.m. Monday, May 4, through 5 p.m. Thursday, May 7.
The lane closure is necessary for the safety of the travelling public and construction staff while they prepare to shift traffic into a temporary alignment over Beaverdam Road. Zachary Construction is replacing the two bridges — one in each direction — over Beaverdam Road as part of a $33 million contract that calls for completion in April 2028.
NCDOT inspects and maintains more than 18,000 structures across the state including more than 300 in Haywood County alone.
Drivers should remain alert, avoid distracted driving and obey all posted traffic signs while on the interstate.
