Cleveland County Intersection to Become Interchange

MOORESBORO – An N.C. Department of Transportation contractor will begin converting an intersection on a Cleveland County highway to an interchange this week.

Crews from E.S. Wagner Company LLC, of Charlotte, will upgrade the U.S. 74 intersection with Lattimore Road and North Academy Street to an interchange over the next year, improving traffic flow and reducing potential conflict points for drivers.

This is part of a $53 million project to upgrade approximately 1.2 miles of U.S. 74 between Mooresboro and the Shelby Bypass.

Beginning Wednesday, May 13, North Academy Street and Lattimore Road will close near U.S. 74 for one year while crews build a bridge over U.S. 74 connecting Lattimore Road and North Academy Street and construct ramps connecting the roads to U.S. 74.

Drivers will follow these signed detours during construction:

  • For Lattimore Road: From U.S. 74 West, take Peachtree Road to Lattimore Road. From U.S. 74 East, exit to N.C. 120, then take Ellenboro Road to Mooresboro Road then West Zion Church Road, Padgett Road and Peachtree Road to Lattimore Road.
  • For North Academy Street: From U.S. 74 West, take Peachtree Road/McBrayer Homestead Road then Whitaker Road and Sandy Run Church Road/East Church Street to North Academy Street. From U.S. 74 East, exit to N.C. 120, then take Faye Toney Road, Belaire Road and West Main Street to North Academy Street.
