SURF CITY – The N.C. Department of Transportation and Town of Surf City will continue to pilot a traffic signal to address congestion near the island roundabout at N.C. 50 (South Topsail Drive) and N.C. 210 (North New River Drive).
During the initial two-week trial period that began on May 6, NCDOT and the Town of Surf City saw overall positive results with the temporary signal. No crashes occurred near the island roundabout and with limited pedestrian activity, traffic moved more efficiently, improving safety for pedestrians and drivers. Vehicular backups observed were limited to peak travel times.
The signal will remain in place for a few more weeks as NCDOT monitors congestion and adjusts the signal timing as necessary. The Department and the Town of Surf City continue to work towards a long-term solution.
Drivers are encouraged to slow down, pay close attention to the traffic signal and follow all signage.
