NCDOT Opens Speer Bridge Road Roundabouts in Yadkin County

A rural, open road intersection with a roundabout, clear lanes and a yield sign.

Crews reopened Speer Bridge Road on Friday after months of construction.

YADKINVILLE – The N.C. Department of Transportation reopened a Yadkin County road near U.S. 421 on Friday after installing two roundabouts.

Crews from Triangle Grading & Paving began the $1.4 million project on Speer Bridge Road in August, first building a roundabout for the U.S. 421 South ramp then beginning the roundabout for the U.S. 421 North ramp in March.

Engineers conducted their final inspection Wednesday, greenlighting the contractor to remove the detour and open the road with the new traffic pattern.

“Adding roundabouts to these intersections will keep traffic flowing more than the stop-and-go of a traditional intersection and improve sight distance,” said Benjamin Whitaker, resident engineer for Yadkin, Surry and Alleghany counties. “Building the roundabouts consecutively allowed us to minimize construction impacts to traffic while delivering a solution that improves safety and reduces congestion.”

Drivers navigating the roundabout should remember:

  • Slow down as you approach the roundabout
  • Yield to any vehicles already in the roundabout
  • Use turn signals when exiting
