CANTON – Next week, N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews will be working along Interstate 40 near Champion Drive (Exit 31) as a major milestone approaches for the ongoing bridge replacement project. A newer structure is being built to modern standards, replacing the existing bridge that has reached the end of its service life. The new structure will have an anticipated life span of at least 50 years.
Starting at 7 p.m. Monday, travel lanes along I-40 East will be shifted through single lane closures. In addition, both the exit ramp and entrance ramp at Exit 31 will be closed.
During these closures, drivers will be detoured as follows:
- I-40 East off-ramp traffic will follow the detour to Exit 33 back to I-40 West to Exit 31.
- I-40 East on-ramp traffic will follow the detour using I-40 West to Exit 27 and back to I-40 East.
Weather depending, all lane and ramp closures will be removed by late afternoon Thursday, June 11.
