LENOIR – An N.C. Department of Transportation contractor will begin repairing a failing slope along U.S. 321 North in Caldwell County on Wednesday.
The slope along U.S. 321 North, approximately 1 mile north of Richland Road, has deteriorated over time and recently began undermining the guardrail along U.S. 321 North.
An NCDOT contractor will install a soil-nail wall to support the slope, which involves inserting long rods into the soil beneath the road, filling those with grout to adhere the rods to the earth, then spraying concrete over the soil face to hold the rods in place and create a solid wall.
Crews will close the right lane of U.S. 321 North throughout installation, which begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday. Construction will continue each day except Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. until the retaining wall is finished later this month.
Motorists are encouraged to allow additional travel time, obey all posted signs and avoid distracted driving.
