Target Date Set for Jonathan Creek Roundabout

WAYNESVILLE – The N.C. Department of Transportation will soon complete a new roundabout constructed as part of a safety and mobility project along U.S. 276 marking a significant milestone to improve safety and traffic flow.

Drivers will be in the completed roundabout prior the first day of school at nearby Jonathan Creek Elementary School. Traffic is planned to be shifted into its final configuration by Aug. 17 with drivers utilizing the two-lane roundabout at the intersection of U.S. 276 and Dellwood Road (U.S. 19).

The roundabout is currently in a one-lane pattern, and crews will continue surface construction until completion. Finishing the roundabout will end the first phase a $38.5 million contract to improve safety and mobility along U.S. 276. Crews from WNC Paving, the contractor, will begin operations on U.S. 276 after roundabout construction is complete.

Roundabouts reduce severe crashes by slowing vehicle speeds and minimizing conflict points. The new intersection configuration is expected to improve operational efficiency while enhancing safety for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Motorists are encouraged to use caution while adjusting to the new traffic pattern and to follow all posted signs and pavement markings.

NCDOT has a website with roundabout information and instruction:
  • Slow down and be prepared to yield to traffic already circulating in the roundabout.
  • Watch for pedestrians and cyclists crossing at designated locations.
  • Choose the appropriate lane before entering the roundabout and follow directional signage.
  • The right lane is used to exit out of the roundabout
  • Stay in the left lane to go through it halfway around
  • Avoid stopping within the roundabout except when required to yield.

Motorists are encouraged to remain alert and use caution while traveling through the area as drivers become accustomed to the new traffic pattern. Drivers are to obey all posted signs traffic signs and follow instructions of flaggers for the safety of motorists and workers.
