MANNS HARBOR – People are encouraged to participate in an upcoming public meeting for a proposed project to install wildlife crossings along U.S. 64 in Dare County.
The meeting will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. June 23 at the Manns Harbor Community Building, 6657 U.S. 64. NCDOT representatives will be available to answer questions and receive comments.
The N.C. Department of Transportation is planning and developing a project to protect travelers and wildlife by constructing crossings that would allow wildlife to safely cross under the highway. Research from similar projects has shown these crossings can reduce the number wildlife-vehicle collisions on roadways.
NCDOT is working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission on installing underpasses and fencing from east of the East Lake community to west of Robertson Landing Road. The crossings would be spread out over a 2.5-mile stretch of U.S. 64 in Dare County.
NCDOT’s planning and design process will evaluate alternative designs, minimizing disruption to traffic flow, preserving access to the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, and reducing impacts to natural resources. The preliminary design and environmental review process is anticipated to be completed in 2027.
NCDOT will provide auxiliary aids and services under the Americans with Disabilities Act for disabled people who wish to participate in this meeting.
