Riding Surface to be Grinded During I-26 East Overnight Closures

ASHEVILLE – A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation will close a short stretch of Interstate 26 three nights this week to safely smooth out the riding surface.

The interstate will close from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. tonight through Thursday nights from Brevard Road (Exit 33) to Long Shoals Road (Exit 37). The marked detour will direct traffic down Brevard Road (N.C. 191) then east on Long Shoals Road (N.C. 147) to I-26.

Crews will utilize the overnight closures — pending dry weather — to safely diamond-grind the riding surface and apply new pavement markings.

Wednesday and Thursday nights also include a planned closure of the I-26 West offramp to Long Shoals Road where crews will be milling, resurfacing, re-striping and shifting traffic. All operations are part of the I-26 Widening project.

Transportation officials remind drivers to remain alert, obey all posted signs traffic signs and follow marked detour routes for the safety of motorists and workers.
