RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in
NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
S-Line Project Update
NCDOT hosted officials from the Federal Railroad Administration this week to visit the bridge that is being built to carry Durant Road in Raleigh over the railroad tracks near Capital Boulevard. The project has reached a major construction milestone — setting girders that will support the future overpass.
By separating roadway and rail traffic, the project will improve safety for motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and train operations while allowing uninterrupted travel along Durant Road without delays from passing trains.
The FRA also announced $65 million in Federal-State Partnership funding for the larger S-Line Raleigh to Richmond project, which will provide an improved passenger rail connection between North Carolina and Virginia.
Operation Firecracker
Starting June 29, law enforcement will be cracking down on impaired driving ahead of the Fourth of July weekend. The N.C. Governor's Highway Safety Program will launch its "Operation Firecracker Booze It & Lose It" campaign to promote safe driving around the state.
Every year, the Fourth of July ranks as one of the deadliest holidays nationwide due to drinking and driving. The "Booze It & Lose It" campaign serves as a reminder that there are severe consequences for reckless behavior.

NCDOT's website to learn more about the campaign and consequences of impaired driving.
Holiday Construction
Also, for the July Fourth holiday, NCDOT will temporarily suspend most highway construction projects that cause lane closures between July 2 and 7 to help keep traffic moving along.
