WAYNESVILLE – The N.C. Department of Transportation recently opened the first multi-lane roundabout in western North Carolina.
NCDOT and its contractor constructed the two-lane roundabout at the intersection of U.S. 19 (Dellwood Road) and U.S. 276, near Jonathan Creek Elementary School, as part of a safety and mobility project along U.S. 276.
Opening the facility marks a significant milestone to improve safety and traffic flow in Haywood County. Finishing the roundabout completes the first phase of a $38.5 million contract to improve safety and mobility along U.S. 276.
Crews from WNC Paving, the contractor, have started roadway improvements between the roundabout and the school entrance in hopes of having that work completed — including major drainage upgrades and utility relocation — before the start of school on Aug. 17.
“We want to thank folks for their patience during construction and the positive feedback that we’ve seen since it opened for Independence Day weekend,” said Division 14 Resident Engineer Kenny McCourt. “It functions as expected, moving drivers through the area in less time with slower and safer speeds.
“Roundabouts are a proven safety measure that reduce serious and fatal injury risk, and there’s no better place to do that than near a school.”
Severe crashes are reduced by slowing vehicle speeds and minimizing conflict points. The new intersection configuration is expected to improve operational efficiency while enhancing safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
Motorists are encouraged to use caution while adjusting to the new traffic pattern and to follow all posted signs and pavement markings.
- Slow down and be prepared to yield to traffic already circulating in the roundabout.
- Watch for pedestrians and cyclists crossing at designated locations.
- Choose the appropriate lane before entering the roundabout and follow directional signage.
- The right lane is used to exit out of the roundabout.
- Stay in the left lane to go through it halfway around.
- Avoid stopping within the roundabout except when required to yield.
Motorists are encouraged to remain alert and use caution while traveling through the area as drivers become accustomed to the new traffic pattern. Drivers are to obey all posted signs traffic signs and follow instructions of flaggers for the safety of motorists and workers along U.S. 276.
