Public Meetings Scheduled for Statewide Multimodal Freight Plan Development

RALEIGH – The N.C. Department of Transportation is seeking public input as it develops the next Statewide Multimodal Freight Plan, which will establish goals and strategies to improve the movement of goods across the state.

Three public meetings will be held next week to give people a chance to learn about the draft plan and offer feedback as it is being developed.

Registration is required for each meeting. All are from 1 to 4 p.m. and are scheduled as follows:

  • July 14 at the Town of Waynesville Office, 9 S. Main St., Suite 110, Waynesville. Virtual option available. Register here
  • July 15 at the Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation, 107 Arrow Road, Greensboro. In-person only. Register here
  • July 16 at the Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization Board Room, 525 N. 4th St., Wilmington. Virtual and in-person options available. Register here

The Statewide Multimodal Freight Plan will update the current plan published in 2023.

The plan uses a data-driven approach to address the current status of freight and set goals and strategies to improve North Carolina’s economic competitiveness by streamlining the way freight is moved in the state and identifying tools to get goods to market more efficiently. The plan explores how freight is moved by air, through ports and waterways, and over rail, highways and pipelines.

The N.C. Department of Transportation works with public and private stakeholders to develop the plan so it can be used by freight industry leaders, planning organizations, economic developers, elected officials and others to guide the state’s decision-making and investments in freight.

The plan will be released in the fall for a public comment period, prior to its adoption by the N.C. Board of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration. The plan is expected to be published in early 2027.
