MOUNT AIRY – The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting for a proposed project to modernize N.C. 89 in Mount Airy from 5-7 p.m. on July 16 at North Surry High School, 2440 W. Pine St.
The project would improve mobility and safety with a two-lane, median-divided road with paved shoulders and reduced conflict intersections along N.C. 89 (West Pine Street) from Toast Road to Pine Ridge Road. The project also includes a 10-foot multi-use path north of the road between North Surry High School and Sam Gentry Middle School.
Reduced conflict intersections eliminate left turns from side roads onto busy main roads, instead guiding drivers to a dedicated U-turn lane. A 2023 NCDOT study of 31 reduced conflict intersections constructed without traffic signals found an 80% reduction in frontal impact crashes and a 50% reduction in total crashes.
Project details and maps can be found on the NCDOT project web page publicinput.com/nc89-mountairy.
Project information will be presented at the meeting allowing for one-on-one discussions with project staff, but there will be no formal presentation. The public may drop in at any time.
People may also submit comments before Aug. 6 by phone at 512-580-8850 project code 7682, email nc89mountairy@publicinput.com, or mail to Ramie Shaw, NCDOT Division 11 Project Development Engineer, 801 Statesville Road, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.
