ROCKY MOUNT –The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles is seeking applicants for a commissioned contractor to operate a license plate agency (LPA) in Avery County.
In North Carolina, NCDMV oversees LPAs, but the agencies are managed by private businesses or local governments.
The contract for the current agency, at 301 Cranberry St., in Newland, expired on Feb. 15. The agency has been owned and operated by the Town of Newland since 2018 and continues to operate the office on a month-to-month basis until a new contractor is determined.
The division’s policy is to open applications to operate a license plate agency at the expiration or end of a contract, or when the need arises for a new or additional agency in a county.
Applications must be completed online via the
NCDMV Business Portal no later than Aug. 6. Interested applicants will be required to create a portal log in ID and may call 919-615-8521 with questions. No mail-in or emailed applications will be accepted.
LPAs offer vehicle registration services and title transactions, as well as vehicle license plate renewals, replacement tags and duplicate registrations. Currently, 132 license plate agencies operate in North Carolina.
