WAYNESVILLE – A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation is set to open the U.S. 74 West offramp to Russ Avenue (Exit 102) on Tuesday — Wednesday if weather fails to cooperate.
That operation will be followed on Monday, Aug. 24 by the closure of the onramp from Russ Avenue (U.S. 276) to U.S. 74 West. The marked detour will direct drivers on U.S. 74 East to Exit 104, under the highway, then to U.S. 74 West.
Crews from Buchanan & Sons are opening the new offramp more than two weeks ahead of schedule.
The onramp is anticipated to be closed until mid-October while crews improve the alignment, install new water drainage lines, pave and place striping on the new path.
These operations are part of the $42.8 million contract to upgrade and modernize Russ Avenue (U.S. 276) from U.S. 74 to downtown. Transportation officials state that the project is progressing at a steady pace for substantial completion late next year.
Current operations on Russ Avenue include installation of water and sewer lines which will be followed by stormwater installation, grading, curb and gutter creation, paving operations and traffic signal installation. Crew are working diligently to minimize traffic impacts and keep access to all businesses open.
Transportation officials advise road users to plan ahead, remain alert, avoid distractions and obey all posted signs.
