STANTONSBURG – A project to improve storm drainage along a Wilson County roadway will require a detour starting next week as students return to school.
An N.C. Department of Transportation bridge maintenance crew will remove a deteriorating corrugated metal pipe beneath Pelt Road near the Wilson-Wayne county line. The pipe is nearing the end of its service life.
State and contract crews will install a larger aluminum box culvert to improve water flow and then repave the roadway outside Stantonsburg.
The closure is scheduled to begin around 8 a.m. Monday and could last up to two weeks, weather permitting.
A marked detour — affecting buses and other traffic for three nearby schools — will use N.C. 111/222, Red Hill Road and St. James Church Road.
Materials for the project arrived late last week, allowing the department to coordinate schedules with its contractors.
Drivers should plan for extra travel time on the detour and use caution when approaching the work zone.
