RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation received multiple awards at this year’s Southern Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (SASHTO) conference, recognizing three projects’ achievements in community mobility, operations and roadway safety.
The awards were presented earlier this week at SASHTO’s annual conference in Greenville, S.C.
In the Quality of Life/Community Development Medium Size category, NCDOT won for its project expanding on demand transit across 11 rural counties in different regions of the state. The Mobility for Everyone, Everywhere in NC project creates more flexible, curb to curb transportation options that improve access to jobs, medical care and other daily needs for residents who lack reliable transit.
NCDOT also won the Operations Excellence Small Project category for its Statewide Transportation Operations Center (STOC), based in Raleigh, which integrates regional traffic management centers and ensures continuous traffic monitoring. This system supports more efficient and coordinated communication during crashes, severe weather or other incidents, helping maintain real time traveler information when it matters most.
Lastly, the department won the Safety Medium Size project award for its Spot Safety Program aimed at improving safety for pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as reducing lane departures and frontal impact crashes. Improvements in the program included guardrails, sidewalks, pedestrian crossings and other proven safety measures aimed at lowering fatal and severe injury crashes.
Together, these projects demonstrate NCDOT’s commitment to strengthening mobility, enhancing operational readiness and improving safety for communities across North Carolina.
