MOUNT AIRY – N.C. Department of Transportation engineers are still early in developing a project to modernize a 5-mile section of N.C. 89 in Surry County.
NCDOT held a public input meeting at North Surry High School on July 16 to share a conceptual design and receive feedback from the public on a modernization project for N.C. 89 (West Pine Street) from Pine Ridge Road to Toast Road.
Comments were accepted online and by email, phone and mail until Aug. 6.
Engineers are carefully considering the comments received along with technical and environmental considerations, including potential property impacts.
“We want to be clear: No final design decisions have been made,” said Ramie Shaw, NCDOT project development engineer for Surry and seven other counties in northwest North Carolina. “We appreciate everyone who participated in the July meeting or submitted comments afterward. Public feedback is an important part of the information NCDOT is considering as we determine the appropriate next steps for this project.”
The review process will continue over the coming months as engineers develop the best path forward to deliver a modern, safer corridor.
