RONDA – N.C. Department of Transportation crews have started a project to improve the traffic pattern at Ronda-Clingman Elementary School in Wilkes County.

The project involves adding room for additional vehicle storage and improving traffic flow for personal vehicles and school buses alike. Transportation officials expect to finish the project early this fall.

“We’re always looking for ways to improve safety and access to schools in our area,” said Brandon Whitaker, NCDOT’s deputy division engineer for Wilkes and seven other counties in the High Country. “Working with our Municipal School Transportation Assistance unit, we identified this cost-effective solution without impacting private properties or impeding traffic on Clingman Road for lengthy construction activity.”

The N.C. Board of Transportation voted at meetings in June and July to allocate $750,000 for the project, which crews began late this summer.

Crews have limited work to non-peak hours, and most work will be finished without impacting traffic.
