Hill Street to Close in Asheville

ASHEVILLE – Hill Street will close beginning Sunday, Sept. 13, as part of construction on the Interstate 26 Connector project.

During the closure, drivers from the Hillcrest and Montford neighborhoods should use Clingman Avenue or Broadway Street to access Riverside Drive, depending on their destination and direction of travel. Standard closure and detour signs will be posted in the area to help guide drivers. The closure will remain in place through at least the end of 2027.

Crews will utilize the full width of the roadway to replace the existing Atkinson Street bridge over I-26 and build a new roundabout connecting Hill Street, Atkinson Street, Courtland Avenue and Houston Street. Due to limited space in the area and realignment of I-26, a complete closure is necessary to safely complete the work and establish a new connection to Riverside Drive.

The ramps to and from I-26/240 at Hill Street were closed earlier this year for other operations associated with I-26 Connector construction.

The I-26 Connector project will improve I-26/I-240 between Haywood Road and Broadway Street, including new and improved bridges, interchanges and connections through the area.
