Bridge Demolition Requires Weekend Road Closure in Randolph County

ASHEBORO – The N.C. Department of Transportation is set to close of a stretch of U.S. 64 Business in Randolph County this weekend so crews can safely demolish the old Albemarle Road (N.C. 49) overpass.

Starting after 12:01 a.m. on Sept. 19, U.S. 64 Business will be closed in both directions at the Albemarle Road overpass while crews remove the adjacent bridge structure that is no longer in use. The roadway is expected to reopen by 6 a.m. on Sept. 21, weather permitting.

During the closure, traffic will be detoured onto the U.S. 64 Asheboro Bypass between U.S. 64 Business and Interstate 73/74; then onto I-73/74 to the U.S. 64 Business interchange, which is near the Albemarle Road overpass.

This work is part of a construction project to widen approximately one mile of U.S. 64 Business between the Asheboro Bypass and the I-73/74 interchange and make various road realignments and improvements in the vicinity of the U.S. 64 Business and I-73/74 junction. The full project is expected to be complete in 2029.

Transportation officials remind drivers to plan for detours, remain alert and obey all posted traffic signs.
