MANTEO – The N.C. Department of Transportation is advising travelers to prepare for possible impacts to N.C. 12 south of the Basnight Bridge as an autumn nor’easter develops near the Outer Banks.
The National Weather Service is forecasting high winds and heavy rain to begin impacting coastal areas on Wednesday. If the forecast holds, difficult driving conditions along N.C. 12 are likely, particularly during high tide cycles, peaking with the Thursday evening and Friday morning high tides.
Overnight travel may become especially hazardous at times, and temporary closures of the highway are possible.
NCDOT crews are working to fortify protective dunes on Pea, Hatteras and Ocracoke islands and improve roadway drainage ahead of the storm.
Equipment is also being staged in vulnerable areas, with crews on standby to respond to any impacts.
