MOUNT AIRY – An N.C. Department of Transportation contract will enter a new phase of an intersection improvement project in Surry County next week.
Smith-Rowe LLC, of Mount Airy, will close Round Peak Church Road near N.C. 89 beginning Friday to continue converting the intersection to a roundabout.
N.C. 89 will remain open throughout construction. Drivers will follow a signed detour around the Round Peak Church Road closure on N.C. 89 (West Pine Street), Beulah Church Road and Palmer Road. The road will remain closed until crews enter the next phase of construction in early 2027.
An NCDOT study of 30 intersections converted to roundabouts found fatal and injury crashes reduced by 76%, and total crashes reduced by 46%.
The $7.5 million contract calls for the project to finish in early 2028.
