WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH – The N.C. Department of Transportation recently awarded a contract to construct Phase 1 of the Wrightsville Beach bridge replacement project.
Phase 1 includes the of construction the smaller bridge on West Salisbury Street over Lees Cut and waterline relocation. Because of the unique alternative delivery method for this project, contracts are awarded in phases through collaboration and negotiation with the contractor.
The Phase 1 contract was awarded to Balfour Beatty for $8.67 million.
As part of the contract, waterline relocation must be completed prior to construction of the new bridge. Waterline relocation is expected to begin in October and take 4-8 weeks. Residents should expect to see construction equipment on Pelican Drive and on the shoulder of West Salisbury Street. Most work will occur outside the travel lanes and is not expected to impact traffic.
Once waterline relocation is complete, West Salisbury Street over Lees Cut will fully close for construction of the new bridge. The public will be notified once an official closure date has been identified.
