BELMONT – An N.C. Department of Transportation contractor soon will begin a bridge rehabilitation project in Gaston County.
Crews from Astron General Contracting Co. Inc., of Dallas, will begin building a temporary structure under the bridge that carries N.C. 273 over a Duke Energy waterway near Belmont on Friday.
Once that structure is finished, crews will begin structural upgrades and maintenance to extend the life of the bridge until it can be replaced, likely after 2029.
A flagging operation will be used intermittently throughout the project, but motorists traveling through the area are encouraged to use the signed detour around the operation on Armstrong Ford Road, South New Hope Road and Armstrong Road.
Crews are expected to finish the operation in approximately two months.
