RALEIGH – State transportation officials are seeking a final round of public input on the 2027 Multimodal Statewide Freight Plan, a federally required document that guides the state’s efforts to improve the movement of goods in North Carolina.

N.C. Department of Transportation staff presented the draft plan to the state Board of Transportation on Wednesday (Nov. 4). The board is expected to consider adopting the plan during its regular Dec. 3 meeting before sending it to the Federal Highway Administration for final approval.

The public has until Dec. 2 to provide feedback on the draft plan. People can provide suggestions and other feedback by mail, email or calling:

As required by federal law, the 2027 plan will update the current plan published in 2023.

The plan uses a data-driven approach to address the status of freight, and establish goals and strategies to improve North Carolina’s economic competitiveness by streamlining the way freight is moved and identifying tools to get goods to market more efficiently. The plan explores how freight is moved by air, through ports and waterways, and over rail, highways and pipelines.

NCDOT works with public and private stakeholders to develop the plan so it can be used by freight industry leaders, planning organizations, economic developers, elected officials and others to guide the state’s decision-making and investments in freight.

This is the second and final round of public input NCDOT has sought. The agency held three public meetings in July to gather initial input for the plan.
