HIGHLANDS – A truck crash Wednesday morning closed U.S. 64 between Highlands and Cashiers.
The N.C. Department of Transportation is assisting local agencies following the crash near Rhody Lane. A gas truck crashed through guardrail and settled on a slope below the road.
While N.C. State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, weather was not a factor as the highway was dry and there was no snow or ice.
The westbound closure is located near Norton Road. The eastbound closure is beyond the hospital. Residents may travel in either direction up to — but not beyond — the crash site to access driveways.
Trucks are to remain on designated truck routes.The road will reopen after recovery efforts are complete, and if necessary, repairs to the roadway as well. Early estimates indicate the highway reopening Friday afternoon.
