NCDOT Celebrates National Bike & Roll to School Day

RALEIGH – N.C. Department of Transportation staff joined students, families, and school communities in Durham and Asheville to celebrate National Bike & Roll to School Day.

The nationwide event, which promotes safe, active transportation to school, highlights the benefits of walking, biking and rolling, with skates, scooters and mobility devices like wheelchairs.

At Southwest Elementary School in Durham and Lucy S. Herring School in Asheville, participants gathered Wednesday morning to demonstrate how active transportation can be safe, fun and practical option for daily travel.

“National Bike & Roll to School Day is an opportunity to show how small changes in how we travel can have a big impact," said Brennon Fuqua, director of NCDOT's Integrated Mobility Division (IMD). “When students walk, bike, or roll to school, they build healthy habits, reduce traffic around schools and create safer, more connected communities."

NCDOT IMD supports programs and partnerships that expand safe, accessible transportation options statewide.
