Contractor to Replace Two Bridges in Randolph County

ASHEBORO – A contractor will be replacing two bridges in Randolph County that will require road closures beginning Monday, Feb. 12.

The 61-year-old bridge on Grantville Lane over Mill Creek, east of Asheboro, and the 51-year-old span on Starmount Road over Sandy Creek, north of Liberty, will be replaced.

Mountain Creek Contractors Inc. of Catawba recently received two contracts totaling $1.27 million from the N.C. Department of Transportation for both projects. The new bridges are expected to open by this summer.

During the closures, motorists should use these detours:

  • Grantville Lane bridge: Pleasant Ridge Road, Young Road and Grantville Lane.
  • Starmount Road bridge: U.S. 421, Brown’s Meadow Road, Old U.S. 421, York Martin Road and Bunton Swaim Road.

Although safe, both bridges are deemed functionally obsolete because they no longer meet modern traffic needs. Additionally, the Starmount Road bridge has become structurally deficient, which means it requires more frequent and costly maintenance.
