CHARLOTTE – A pair of contracts awarded by the Department of
Transportation will bring improvements to 65 miles of state roads in Mecklenburg
and Union counties.
A $6 million contract includes milling, resurfacing, and shoulder
reconstruction of 22 miles in Mecklenburg County, including sections of N.C. 51
and 11 segments of secondary roads.
The other contract, worth $9.7 million, calls for the same type of work over
42 miles of Union County roads, including two sections of N.C. 75 and 32
sections of secondary roads.
Work in Mecklenburg County can start as soon as June 1, wrapping up by
September 2019. Improvements in Union County can start by the end of May with
completion in October 2019.
These were two of eight road and bridge contracts recently awarded by the
N.C. Department of Transportation. Per state law they went to the lowest
qualified bidder for each project. The contracts are worth $56.5 million, about
$1.7 million under engineer estimates.
