ROANOKE RAPIDS – A stretch of U.S. 301
in his native Halifax County will be dedicated in honor of the late state Sen.
Edward W. Jones.
The N.C. Board of Transportation on Thursday, March 8, approved a
request from the Halifax County commissioners to dedicate U.S. 301 from the
Edgecombe County line to a point five miles north in Halifax County as the
Senator Edward E. Jones Highway.
His family and friends will celebrate the road dedication during a
ceremony Sunday, March 11, at 3 p.m. at St. Paul’s Baptist Church, 421 S.
McDaniel St., in Enfield. The ceremony is open to the media and will include
comments from Gus Tulloss, the state Transportation Board member for Division 4,
Enfield Mayor Wayne Anderson, and other local officials.
An Army veteran, Jones was a former mayor of Enfield. He served
briefly in the N.C. House of Representatives until his appointment in 2007 to
fill a vacancy in the state Senate. He kept that seat until his death at age 62
in 2012.
