RALEIGH – Thanks to a recently awarded contract by the N.C.
Department of Transportation, roughly 30 miles of state roads in eastern Wake
County will be getting upgrades. The contract calls for the milling and
resurfacing of 3.4 miles of U.S. 64 Business, 6.3 miles of N.C. 96, and 4.8
miles of N.C. 97. About 14.2 miles of secondary roads will also be
resurfaced.
The nearly $5.9 million contract awarded to Fred Smith Company of Raleigh
calls for work to commence as early as June 1 and is expected to be completed by
November 1, 2019.
As required by state law, the contract was awarded to the pre-qualified
candidate with the lowest bid. This is among eight road and bridge contracts
recently awarded by the transportation department worth $56.5 million, an amount
about $1.7 million under department engineer forecasts.
