CHARLOTTE – More than 100 miles of roads are set to be
resurfaced in Gaston, Catawba and Burke counties, thanks to two contracts
awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation. Both contracts include
milling, resurfacing, and shoulder reconstruction.
Gaston County drivers will see improvements to portions of N.C. 16, N.C. 279
and N.C. 274, along with 99 sections of secondary roads. Resurfacing work in
Catawba County will take place on N.C. 16, N.C. 150, and 36 secondary road
sections.
Burke County will see improvements on Clement Boulevard NW from Ninth Avenue
NW to the Catawba County line. Crews will resurface this 0.35–mile stretch under
the Catawba County contract to complete resurfacing Clement Boulevard back to
U.S. 321, since it’s a short distance over the county line.
Work in all areas can start as early as May 30. Resurfacing work in Gaston is
scheduled to wrap up by Sept. 15, 2019, while the Catawba and Burke improvements
should be finished by July 28, 2019.
These were two of eight road and bridge contracts recently awarded by the
N.C. Department of Transportation. Per state law they went to the lowest
qualified bidder for each project. The contracts are worth $56.5 million, about
$1.7 million under engineer estimates.
