ROCKINGHAM – A contractor will widen a 3.5-mile section of
U.S. 1 in Richmond County, after the N.C. Department of Transportation awarded a
nearly $11.4 million contract last month.
Workers for R.E. Goodson Construction Co. Inc. of Darlington, S.C., will
widen the road between just north of the Rockingham Motor Speedway, where U.S. 1
is a multilane highway, and north of Fox Road. The project will increase
mobility by adding a travel lane in each direction on the highway, east of
Rockingham.
The contractor may begin after July 2, and the project completion is
scheduled for spring 2021.
This was one of eight road and bridge contracts recently awarded by NCDOT to
the lowest, qualified bidder. The contracts are worth $56.5 million, about $1.7
million under engineer estimates.
