DURHAM – Work on the Alston Avenue widening project will
require a section of the road to be closed this weekend. Starting Saturday,
April 28 at 7 a.m., crews will close the road between Main Street and Taylor
Street.
The closure is needed to install a storm-drain pipe across Alston between
Main Street and Morning Glory Avenue. Engineers expect to complete the work in
two days and reopen the road by Monday, April 30, at 6 a.m.
Over the weekend, motorists may utilize Main Street, Elizabeth Street, and
Holloway Street to detour around the closure. Drivers are urged to use caution
when approaching the closures, and to anticipate needing extra time while
traveling through the area because of the detour.
Two ramp closures already in place for the project remain in effect, with the
ramps from eastbound Alston Avenue to northbound Durham Freeway, and from the
southbound freeway to Alston Avenue shut down. They are both expected to open
in time for traffic to shift to the new Alston Avenue bridge over the freeway to
open by Memorial Day weekend.
This weekend’s work and the ramp closures are part of a series of
improvements for Alston Avenue, including the new bridge and road-widening, with
the intent of reducing congestion and improving safety along the road. The
project is scheduled to wrap up in 2019.
