Proposed extension of Independence Boulevard - New Hanover County

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes a 1.7-mile extension of Independence Boulevard in Wilmington. The project aims to improve mobility and reduce traffic congestion through central Wilmington.

A public meeting is scheduled for:

Monday, Dec. 1, 2025
Open House: 5-6:30 p.m.
Public Hearing: 6:30 p.m.

Join Meeting Virtually​

NCDOT is seeking public input on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement. Review the document and submit your feedback using NCDOT’s public input webpage​. To have your comments included in the project record, please submit them by Jan. 16, 2026

The open house and hearing provide an opportunity for the public to make formal comments to be included in the project record.  These comments will be considered in the selection of the Preferred Alternative for the project. Project details and maps can be found at the NCDOT public i​nput w​ebpage​​​​​​​​​​​​​​.​​

Public Comment

NCDOT representatives will be available to answer questions and receive comments. The comments and information received will be taken into consideration as work on the project develops.
