The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Rail Division is proposing a safety improvement at the railroad crossing on East 7th Avenue and a new railroad crossing at East 5th Avenue. The purpose of this project is to improve safety by:
  • Eliminating conflicts between railroad and street traffic at the existing 7th Avenue railroad crossing.
  • Shifting southbound traffic from a short section of the road at the intersection of Main Street and 7th Avenue (which does not have a traffic signal) to the standard, four-legged intersection at Main Street and 5th Avenue (which does have a traffic signal).

Due to COVID-19, NCDOT will not host an in-person public meeting for this project. However, the public is invited to review NCDOT's public input portal and submit comments.
