The proposed project was submitted to the N.C. Department of Transportation by the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization in 2018 to help relieve traffic congestion in the area. The project was added to the State Transportation Improvement Program in 2019.
The
2024-2033 State Transportation Improvement Program allocated preliminary engineering funds for this proposed project. On Nov. 2, 2023, the project received state funding to advance the project from the design stage to the start of construction tentatively scheduled for fall 2025. Construction for the project was previously unfunded and may not have been completed for at least 10 years.
