  • Why was the grade-separated alternative selected?
The project’s current design is a result of public input wanting a grade-separated option without the land impacts associated with a Single Point Urban Interchange (a type of interchange that consolidates all traffic movements under one large, signalized overpass) as presented at the Aug. 21, 2017, public meeting.

  • How will this grade-separated interchange help when the corridors already have several traffic signals?
    • The bridge would eliminate the bottleneck at this intersection, which is now a traffic signal with eight phases, causing delays. The minor turning movements would be shifted to nearby signalized intersections with more capacity to more efficiently handle this redirected traffic.
    • By building the bridge and relocating the turning moves, overall delays are expected to be reduced within the project area. With the bridge, each major corridor is able to operate independent of the other, allowing the traffic signals to move traffic more efficiently.

  • How will construction impact businesses and traffic?
    • Customer access to businesses will be maintained during construction, which will utilize temporary lanes in order to safely keep traffic flowing while work is completed. There will be restrictions on closing lanes during peak travel times.
    • The N.C. Department of Transportation will notify the public of temporary or overnight lane closures throughout construction. With the opening of the Drysdale Drive extension, some drivers will be able to avoid this intersection during construction.

  • Can’t you cancel this project and put the money into another project in Wilmington?

This project has shown to provide a good benefit because of the traffic volumes and congestion, and it successfully competed with other proposed projects in NCDOT’s State Transportation Improvement Program, or STIP, which prioritizes projects based on data, with input from our planning partners. NCDOT does long-term planning as it seeks to address the public’s transportation needs across the region.
