Planning is underway to make improvements to U.S. 70 (Glenwood Avenue) from west of T.W. Alexander Drive to I-540, in Durham and Wake counties.
For funding purposes, work would be divided into three sections:
- Section A involves U.S. 70 corridor upgrades from west of T.W. Alexander Drive to I-540.
- Section B involves converting the intersection at U.S. 70 and T.W. Alexander Drive into an interchange.
- Section C involves converting the intersection at U.S. 70 and Brier Creek Parkway to an interchange.
The proposed work would address existing traffic congestion, future traffic congestion, poor traffic flow and the high number of vehicle crashes. These conditions are anticipated to worsen if no action is taken.
The proposed project is being developed in conjunction with additional proposed improvements to U.S. 70 between T.W. Alexander Drive in Raleigh and Lynn Road in Durham.
This project is listed as Project U-5518 in the N.C. Department of Transportation's State Transportation Improvement Program and is funded for $58 million.
