Project Overview
The project upgraded a 4.7-mile section of U.S. 70 in Wilson’s Mills into a freeway that fully controls where vehicles enter and exit, like an interstate. The N.C. Department of Transportation plans to upgrade U.S. 70 between Raleigh and Morehead City into future Interstate 42.
This 4.7-mile route currently had four travel lanes with conventional intersections and traffic signals. Two interchanges that include bridges, ramps and loops were built to replace the traffic signals at Swift Creek Road and at Wilson’s Mills Road.
The remaining intersections and median openings were closed and service roads were built to improve safety and mobility.
