How to Apply for Grants
NCDOT is now accepting applications for Safe Routes to School Planning and Programming Grant proposals from
Oct 5-Nov 6, 2026.
The program facilitates the planning, development, and implementation of projects and activities to improve safety, reduce traffic and fuel consumption, and improve air quality near K-12 schools.
The Safe Routes to School Program includes several direct initiatives:

Safe Routes to School
Planning and Programming Grants, a cost-reimbursement program for Safe Routes to School planning and programming implemented by awardees such as local governments, transportation planning organizations, schools, and other eligible entities.

Walk, Bike and Roll to School Days, typically held in May and October to encourage students to be physically active throughout the year, practice safe and active transportation, and enjoy time with friends and family on the way to school.

Let's Go NC! Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety Curriculum, a comprehensive walking and biking safety curriculum for grades K-5 designed to teach and encourage safe active transportation behaviors in children. The curriculum is free to access, download, and use, and aligns with state education standards.
