Work to Reopen Another Lane of I-73 South Begins Tuesday

GREENSBORO – Work begins Tuesday to reopen another lane of Interstate 73 South, where a fuel tanker crash and fire on a bridge last week led to closures.

Both the right and center lanes of the bridge have now been deemed safe for traffic. The right lane reopened on the night of the crash, last Thursday.

NCDOT crews continue to work to make the left lane functional again.

Beginning Tuesday, crews will install a portable concrete barrier that will block off the left lane and shoulder, where the most repair work is needed, and reopen the center lane.

The department is awaiting test results that will indicate if the steel beams directly impacted by the fire need to be replaced.

The information will give NCDOT a better idea of what the repair may cost and how long it will take.

Drivers are asked to slow down and use caution while crews continue to work in this limited-traffic corridor.
